Dharma is the recognition, acceptance and fulfilment of universal duties.; vocation, working practices, family structure. The reality is accepting who we are and exploring our divinity through day to day living - Being you.
"Meet your own self. Be with your own self, listen to it, obey it, cherish it, keep it in mind ceaselessly. You need no other guide." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Life in balance requires rhythm, dedication and practice, and I feel privileged to have discovered tools, techniques, methods and practices to assist on my journey.
The epiphany to merge practices, reading architecture through acknowledgment of life force energy, consciousness as a principle tool for operating at the energetic level has been both compelling and enlightening.
This energy I call ‘spatial prana’.
The East-West Hybrid is an evolving prototypical project merging eastern squat toilet and hygiene with the bio-mechanical nuance of western populous. Whilst eastern societies and indigenous populations are radically more flexible, the western sedentary lifestyles, customs and cultures result in less mobile, less flexible bodies and less supportive of the physical need.
Structural and material prototypes have evolved addressing functional evolutionary conditioning by offering a raised heal squatting position, ultimately more hygienic and supporting the structural characteristics of internal lower intestine.
In essence, ‘a sit is an interrupted squat’, and the throne toilet we accept as practical and useful is both unhygienic and unsupportive, potentially leading to illness such as IBS and serious terminal conditions.
We need to rethink this apparatus at a production scale, and work towards rendering the existing model irresponsible and obsolete. This project will offer an alternative.
Status - Ongoing
An experimental model of construction, both plan and section devoid of the ‘90 degree’ angle instead employing the ‘catenary’ arch as spatial organisational tool.
Without prescriptive use, it is space to accommodate all and every need, whim or desire. However its first incarnation will be a rural practice studio.
Phase 1 commencing Autumn 2019
Temple on the Water
A project that supports spending time in retreat on water, isolated and in solitude. A meditation space, a reading room, a practice studio. The cabin in the wetlands, the Temple on the Water.
Design Development Stage commencing Autumn 2019
Off Grid Living
An exploration and bringing together of engineered component, apparatus, and material to create a model building as prototype for occupation. This building will generate energy requirements, address waste, assist in growing plant foods for consumption and offer a solution to the impending solar cooling, fall in temperature, reduction in food supply and demand for model housing to support, and shelter.
Design Development commencing Summer 2019
It is with wonderment the school ‘portacabin’ deployed across the western nations mid to late 20th Century has not been reinvented. Yes, they have receded in numbers but it seems what’s left of this standard classroom, , schools employ for early years and ‘preschool’ classrooms.
As an architect with a pre school-age child my choice of school will be informed by preschool classroom. In my opinion the classroom building will evidence a teaching method.
The preschool building must support education and learning. Architects versed in school building projects are generally driven by government standards and cookie-cut classrooms unable to offer alternatives, servant to their master.
Aspirational but attainable, I will demonstrate a self generated pre-school building model design, and with philanthropic assistance, gift our children a pre-school exemplar, to stimulate and educate, to calm and nurture, to enjoy. A refuge in a campus of mediocrity.
Commencement of feasibility studies Autumn 2019
I am fascinated when I stumble upon architects and designers furniture wares, offering beautifully composed photographs of an object oozing materiality, but upon investigation, at the cost of functionality and use.
We need chairs we want to spend time in at various moments in our busy lives. To literally support or provide opportunities for lounging, lying, reclining, or reposing.
I recorded only two examples of a chair affording exacting support the space, the use required. One in a restaurant in Amsterdam, the other a museum in Bangkok.
Many architects designing or specifying furniture ignore this nuance, proposing lounging chairs when support is required - users sitting ‘on edge’ rather than ‘in’, or indeed a materiality of bent timber, beautifully concave, but utterly misreading spine curvature, torso, and lower body curvature, the essence of bio-mechanical studies and design research. Whats’s more, the seat can be deemed unnatural -The sit, the interrupted squat.
Soon, we will embark on creating, testing and prototyping a furniture series.
3G, 4G, Wifi, and imminently 5G will continue to damage our physical bodies at an accelerating rate. Research will reveal the wave-type and impact on outer skin and eyes. Notwithstanding the physical, EMF’s impact on our mental capacity needs to be addressed.
It is true our bodies only heal when we sleep. Its is true electro magnetic frequencies disturb our sleeping patterns. With use of lightweight structure and silver mesh embedded fabric, we can create a refuge to aid sleeping, support rest and give the physical body time to heal. Of course I am proposing a place to sleep, but this concept can be applied to larger structures, and i speculate soon hotels will offer same and lead their market.
This archetype is a plywood temple structure of one third scale to provide a space for sleeping. Structurally supported and shrouded, this Sleep Temple as prototype will offer a place of refuge.
Other models include other structures and formal expressions embedded in historical research that assist meditative practices and illustrate the ability of geometric expression to direct photon energies.

Living with nature
I often ask, how can be build nature!? Perhaps literally, but the joy we experience in nature, how can we bring that to the places we spend our lives.
I captured this image in the urban realm, the month of April of course. Startled by the beauty I hold this as representing the essence of what I aim to achieve in practice. The softness of earth; the carpet; the moisture beneath; complicit in exhibiting a natural bliss. Before architects and architecture, this always existed. Do we bow in reverence accepting its greatness, or can we capture and equal in our constructs. We bow, perhaps enclosing in a transparent vail, and holding in reverence.
Immediately speculating on the ability to re-create, I see the transparent enclosure harnessing the elements and permitting carpet and column to grow. I see the disrupted ground plan. Sure we can deconstruct and transpose to experimental projects. Subversive by practice, simply because the uneven surface can be deemed illegal. So we find alternative labels for what we do….
Temple to Living
Through 2020 I will offer ideas and prototypes for living. Not a house, but a temple. An exploration of the formal, and the non-orthogonal; a building to enlighten, heal, support and nurture. A place to remain.
Soon we will be embarking on a series of rooms to heal. A body of work i will call Healing Spaces. Elemental awareness, and properties thereof, have generated a series of structures to be prototyped and constructed, blueprints we can share that demonstrate architecture as a supporting and affective housing for healing.
As a conglomeration, the adjoining of rooms and relationships between could arguable become the ‘experimental healing house.’ That which we call home. Supporting, nurturing and healing.
Writing has become an integral tool in understanding ones practice, attitude, and belief system. The sketch book is sacrosanct, a method of recording ideas, whilst writing affords the higher self to engage in conversation.
Personal and reflective, other methods of recoding ideas, musings and projects will emerge as we imminently shift into the quantum age.
